ANIMAL WELFARE ACTIVITIES OF THE NGO SOLON (Oct 2012)

Poleis skitso mayrouleas aSt John Chrysostom said that 'we are obliged to show great goodness and kindness to animals for many reasons. Above all because they are of the same origin as ourselves.'

mpoufakos 091012I do not know if the volunteers who are involved in the rescue chains for wounded animals have been inspired by similar exhortations, but what is certain is that humans as a species are changing. I have lived in the countryside for 12 years and can say that I am a witness to a great change in the attitude of humans towards animals. I can also say the same of people who live in the cities.

Two adult eagle owls were recently rescued by the Solon volunteer network. The two eagle owls were found in the Prefecture of Fthiotida, one in the Municipality of Makrakomi (9/10/2012) and the other in the Municipality of Raches (10/10/2012). Both had broken wings and were found by chance by passing residents. In addition, in Domoko, Fthiotida (16/10/2012), a beautiful female hawk was found with a broken leg.

ANIMAL WELFARE ACTIVITIES OF THE NGO SOLON (Dec 2011)
geraki_181211_a

While gathering olives one of our fellow citizens from Limogardi, Fthiotida found a hawk that had been injured in its right wing by shooting. When he saw the hawk it had its mate next to it, which only left when our conscientious fellow citizen approached the wounded bird so as to bring it close to him. As soon as it came to us we administered first aid at our facilities. We then sent it to Athens, to the ANIMA Association for the Protection and Welfare of Wildlife for further care. Several hawks have been lost recently due to 'hunters'. 16/12/2011

An NGO Solon volunteer found a bag left outside his front door with a little puppy of around ten days old inside it, whose eyes had not yet opened. The puppy had been left in the cold all night long, during which there had been very low temperatures. Our volunteer kept it and
fed it with special puppy milk, also offering it all the care a puppy needs: suitable space, regular cleaning, etc. Even cleaning a puppy is only a substitute for the cleaning its mother would give it, and she remains an important factor in his care. It is also not well known that even the special milk cannot substitute for the mother's milk, which protects puppies from germs and digestive problems. We are obliged, as responsible citizens, to consider the issue of sterilisation with greater responsibility and to demand from our Municipality that it does its duty. Respect for life does not mean stray dogs and wounded animals but happy lives, and this should be our desire and our goal. 18/12/2011
